New standard impacting virucidal efficacy of hand hygiene products
Chemical disinfectant and antiseptics – Hygienic handrub virucidal – Test method and requirements (phase 2/step 2)
Date of publication: March 2024
Compliance deadline: October 2025
Why this new norm: EN 17430 is a new European Standard for virucidal hand sanitizers, that assesses the effectiveness of products in reducing the risk of viruses transmission on hands under practical conditions.
- Until now, there was no phase 2 step 2 for virucidal activity, only a phase 2 step 1: EN 14476: “Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics – Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of virucidal activity in the medical area – Test method and requirements (Phase 2/Step 1)”.
- New standard EN 17430 complements the phase 2 step 1 and is a quantitative suspension test in which the effectiveness against various microorganisms is determined with an additional protein load. Phase 2, step 2 tests are practical tests carried out directly on volunteers’ hands.
For hand disinfectants it means that only not harmful to human microorganisms can be used. In this standard Norovirus is used to confirm limited spectrum virucidal activity and virucidal activity of products which passed EN 14476.
According to EN 14885 phase 2 step 1 and phase 2 step 2 tests are both needed to support efficacy claims and the longer contact time must be reported.
